Penelope Cruz Sanchez
Penelope Cruz Sanchez was born in Madrid
to Eduardo Cruz, a retailer, and Encarna Sanchez, hairdresser. As a child she
was an obsessed performer. She would even re-enact commercials on TV for the
entertainment of her parents. However, she decided to dedicate her time to
dancing. After studying classical ballet for nine years in Spain's National
Conservatory, she continued her training under a series of highly acclaimed
dancers. At 15, however she discovered her true calling when she bested over
300 other dancers at an audition at a talent agency. The contract that resulted
in her being signed secured her a variety of roles in Spanish television shows
and music videos, which paved the way for an acting career on the big screen.
Cruz made her debut film in 1993's The Greek Labyrinth (The Greek Labyrinth).
Then she briefly made an appearance in Framed (1992) in a Timothy Dalton
thriller. The Oscar-winning Belle Epoque (1992) was her third film. In the
film, she played one of the four sisters that were trying to win the love of a
handsome Army deserter. The film also earned many Goyas, the Spanish equivalent
to the Academy Awards. She continued to add more films to her resume,
increasing by three or four per year. Soon Cruz was the leading lady in Spanish
cinema. Live Flesh (1997) (Live Flesh) offered her the chance to work with
renowned Spanish director Pedro Almodovar (who would later be her ticket to
international fame), and the same year she was the lead actress in the
thriller/drama/mystery/sci-fi film Open Your Eyes (1997), a huge hit in Spain
that earned eight Goyas (though none for Cruz). In 1998, her fortunes changed
when she won the best Actress Goya for the industry-related movie comedy La
Nina De Tus Ojos (1998). Cruz made several more trips into English-language
films, but All About My Mother (1999) was her first big international hit. She
played an unchaste yet well-meaning nun. As the film was showered with
accolades and awards Cruz was suddenly being sought after on both sides of the
Atlantic. Woman on Top (2000) was her next film. The film was an American
comedy featuring a chef with remarkable culinary skills and extreme motion
sickness. While in the US,
