Anita Ekberg

 

Kerstin Anita Marianne Ekberg (Swedish pronunciation (listen) 29 September 1931 - 11 January 2015) was a Swedish actress who appeared in American and European films, known for her beautiful and striking body. Her iconic performance as Sylvia in Federico Fellini's film La Dolce Vita (1960) earned her fame. Ekberg was born in Sweden on 29 September 1931. She was the sixth child of eight. Anita was a fashion model during her teens. Ekberg, at the urging by her mother in 1950 began to enter Miss Malmo. She was crowned the Miss Sweden contest. Despite having a very limited knowledge of English she travelled to the United States to compete for the 1951 Miss Universe title (an unofficial pageant in that period, the pageant became official in 1952). Ekberg was not crowned the Miss Universe pageant. However she was among the six finalists. Universal Studios offered her an exclusive starlet contract. She was an Universal starlet and took lessons in dramatization, elocution dance and horseback riding, fencing and elocution. She briefly appeared in The Mississippi Gambler (1953), Abbott and Costello go to Mars (1953), Take Me to Town (1953), and The Golden Blade (53).
